New Pilot – Understanding the Overview

“Your Overview is the single most important tool in EVE Online. Master it, and you’ll see danger before it reaches you.”

Every pilot, from a brand-new capsuleer to a veteran Fleet Commander, relies on the Overview. It tells you what is around you, what can be targeted, what is dangerous and where you can warp.

Learning to use the Overview properly will improve your efficiency, awareness and survival more than almost any skill you can train.

What is the Overview?

The Overview is a customisable list of objects in space.

It can display almost anything, including:

  • Ships
  • Stations
  • Stargates
  • Asteroid belts
  • Moons
  • Citadels
  • Wrecks
  • Cargo containers
  • Drones
  • Celestial objects
  • Fleet members
  • NPCs

Think of it as your ship’s tactical radar.

The Layout

The Overview is made up of several columns.

Icon

Shows what type of object it is.

Examples:

  • Ship
  • Stargate
  • Asteroid
  • Station
  • Structure
  • Drone

With experience you’ll recognise these instantly.

Name

The object’s name.

Examples:

  • Jita IV – Moon 4
  • Asteroid (Veldspar)
  • Orca
  • Hulk
  • Catalyst

Type

Tells you what class of object you’re looking at.

For example:

NameType
LSE BoosterOrca
Enemy PilotCatalyst
Ore RockBitumens
StargateStargate

This column is useful for quickly identifying threats.

Distance

Shows how far away the object is.

Knowing distance helps you decide whether to:

  • Approach
  • Orbit
  • Keep at range
  • Warp
  • Ignore it

Velocity

Shows how fast an object is moving.

Fast-moving ships are often harder to hit.

For miners, this is mainly useful for spotting ships approaching your position.

Transversal Velocity (Advanced)

This measures how quickly an object moves across your line of sight.

Combat pilots use this to understand tracking and weapon effectiveness.

As a miner, you don’t need to master it immediately, but you’ll encounter it later if you branch into PvP or mission running.

The Selected Item Window

Clicking anything in the Overview displays it in the Selected Item window.

From here you can:

  • Warp
  • Dock
  • Approach
  • Orbit
  • Keep at range
  • Lock target
  • Jump through gates
  • Mine asteroids

This is much faster than right-clicking objects in space.

Tabs

One Overview can have multiple tabs.

Each tab shows different objects.

A typical LSE setup might include:

General

Everything important.

Use while travelling.

Mining

Shows:

  • Asteroids
  • Ice
  • Fleet members
  • Structures
  • Stations

Hides unnecessary clutter.

Combat

Shows:

  • Ships
  • Drones
  • NPCs
  • Wrecks

Useful for combat or when danger appears.

Travel

Shows only:

  • Gates
  • Stations
  • Structures
  • Celestials

Keeps navigation simple.

PvP

Shows every ship and potential threat.

Ideal during wars or hostile activity.

Colour Tags

Pilots have coloured icons based on their relationship to you.

Common examples include:

ColourMeaning
BlueFriendly corporation or alliance member
GreenFleet member
WhiteNeutral pilot
YellowPilot with a limited engagement or suspect status (depending on your settings)
OrangePilot with poor standings
RedPilot with hostile standings or criminal status (depending on settings)

Always learn what your corporation’s Overview profile displays, as colours can vary depending on standings and settings.

Priority Targets

When mining, pay particular attention to:

Destroyers

Ships like the Catalyst, Thrasher, Coercer and Cormorant are commonly used for inexpensive high-damage attacks.

One destroyer isn’t necessarily dangerous.

Several arriving together deserve your attention.

Battlecruisers

Ships such as the Talos can deliver extremely high burst damage.

Tornadoes

A Tornado can destroy lightly tanked industrial ships from long range.

Fast Tacklers

Interceptors and fast frigates often indicate organised fleets.

Stay alert.

Sorting the Overview

Click a column heading to sort.

Useful examples:

Sort by Distance

The most common option.

Closest objects appear first.

Excellent for mining.

Sort by Name

Helpful when searching for specific stations or fleet members.

Sort by Type

Groups similar ships together.

Very useful during combat.

The Direction of Travel

The small arrow beside an object indicates whether it is moving towards or away from you.

Watching this helps identify ships approaching your mining position.

Using the Overview While Mining

During mining operations:

✓ Keep the Mining tab selected.

✓ Watch for unfamiliar ships entering grid.

✓ Check Local regularly.

✓ Monitor distances.

✓ Stay aligned when practical.

✓ Listen to fleet communications.

Your Overview should be checked every few seconds.

Common Mistakes

Showing Too Much

If every object appears, important information becomes buried.

A clean Overview is an effective Overview.

Ignoring New Arrivals

Most threats appear on the Overview before they become dangerous.

Notice them early.

Using Only One Tab

Different activities need different information.

Switch tabs to suit the situation.

Not Learning the Icons

Recognising ship classes instantly saves valuable time.

LSE Best Practices

Within Last Stand Enterprises we recommend:

  • Use a clean, uncluttered Overview.
  • Keep a dedicated Mining tab.
  • Watch the Overview as often as your mining lasers.
  • Report suspicious ships to fleet.
  • Don’t wait until someone lands beside you to react.
  • Ask leadership if you need help importing or configuring an Overview profile.

Good situational awareness protects both you and the fleet.

Quick Overview Checklist

Before every fleet:

✓ Correct Overview profile loaded

✓ Mining tab selected

✓ Distance column visible

✓ Ship types visible

✓ Fleet members visible

✓ Hostile ships visible

✓ Selected Item window open

✓ Local chat visible beside the Overview

Final Thoughts

Your ship mines ore.

Your Overview keeps you alive.

The most successful EVE pilots aren’t those with the most expensive ships—they’re the ones who notice what others miss. Developing the habit of scanning your Overview every few seconds will help you react sooner, make better decisions and avoid unnecessary losses.

At Last Stand Enterprises, we encourage every pilot to treat the Overview as their primary source of information in space. Learn it well, keep it organised and trust what it tells you.

The best pilots don’t have faster reflexes—they have better awareness.
